The elephant in the room reason Clem. Everyone was thinking about it.

The race just got a lot more interesting. Newt wins South Carolina, by a wide margin. I dare say Marianne came across as a bitter ex-wife hell bent on destroying Newt. That makes everyone's blood run cold. It will be interesting to see if Newt's momentum continues into Florida.

Interesting stats coming from Eric Erickson.

Peter Hamby from CNN notes what is going to be a recipe for disaster for Mitt Romney as he tries to relate to the Republican base.

In South Carolina exit polls, Romney wins only the “moderate or liberal”, those with incomes in excess of $200,000.00, those with postgraduate education, those who oppose the tea party movement, and those who think religion does not matter at all.

A number of those have been consistent through Iowa and New Hampshire too.
The buzz in Washington now is that the Republican Establishment fears Gingrich will cause them to lose the House and not get the Senate. Put another way, the current Republican leadership fears that the man who helped the GOP take back the House for the first time in 40 years and his allies in the tea party who helped take back the House in 2010 will cause the GOP to now lose.

They’ll lose alright — they’ll lose power to others. That’s their real fear.
Must be some interesting conversations going on in Washington right now.

VERY interesting conversations, Kay. Interesting conversations in the Romney camp, too, I would guess. I'll bet they are pretty blown away by the results of the voting today.

Mitt has to be shaken up by this Debi. I imagine Obama is too, he's been fanning the class warfare fires all year preparing for a run against Mitt. Now what is he going to do if Newt or Santorum wins? I liked the advice Huckabee gave Mitt about his tax records, say he'll give them up when Obama releases his college records so we can see if he got any foreign student loans.

Did Gingrich’s Win Break the Rules?

'Foreign student loans'? Where did you dig that up? What other 'timely' charge do you have lined up? Just wait till the Democrats get their chance at Gingrich. He has so many skeletons in his closet, he must have a mansion somewhere just to hold them...

say he'll give them up when Obama releases his college records so we can see if he got any foreign student loans.
Kay, that's not what Huckabee said. *giggle*

Speaking on The O'Reilly Factor, Huckabee said of Romney, "Let him make this challenge: 'I'll release my tax returns when Barack Obama releases his college transcripts and the copy of his admission records to show whether he got any loans as a foreign student. When he releases that, talk to me about my tax returns.'"
You know, Loretta, because the Republicans don't think that Obama is AMERICAN.

The Republicans don't care if it comes out that Gingrich kicked puppies and drowned kittens. They're absolutely desperate to get a Republican in office and willing to scrape the bottom of the barrell, obviously.

Now I remember hearing that quote before. The saddest thing is, nothing like this would ever be said about a white President. Shameful.

Willard Mitt Romney handed the win to Newt Gingrich, a disgraced forced out of Congress past Speaker of the House. Romney's pedestrian handling of the issues, acting like he had something to hide with the tax returns and Gingrich's appealing to the lowest common denominator in South Carolina made all the difference. This is probably the weakest offering from the Republican party in recent years. And that is with taking in account McCain/Palin, which really demonstrates the current line-up's "bottom of the barrel" quality. Mr Obama's re-election team are on record saying they are pleased with Gingrich's win. Mr Gingrich's background is full of issues. History has proved lacks discipline and lets his ego get the best of him. He is the author of the very tactics he has come out sounding like a wounded bear when practiced against him.

You need to try to channel your sense of humor once in awhile Loretta. Huckabee was making a joke.

Yes Pia, I'd say Gingrich broke the rules.
