New York City Program Helps Break Down Barriers Between Young Adults and Law Enforcement Officials

NEW YORK, Nov. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Mutual of America announced today that the Law Enforcement Exploring Program was named a Merit Finalist of the 2011 Community Partnership Award competition.

Offered in conjunction with the New York Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, the Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America Law Enforcement Exploring Program is a community service, career-oriented program designed to educate high school and college students about law enforcement. Giving back to the community is a big part of the program. The students involved, known as “Explorers,” collectively perform approximately 65,000 hours of community service each year.

Every August, a select group of 175 Explorers participate in a two-week intensive program at Fordham University. They take part in daily physical training drills and simulation exercises and attend classes on topics taught by law enforcement officers. “A major goal of this program is to build relationships with young people in our community,” says program director William Montanaro.
