    1. Dear Mike,
Our pack has a huge problem and I was hoping you could give me your input on it.
Our troops Scout Master’s wife, will not let our boys be boys. She home schools her son and all the rest of the boys in our troop go to public schools. She expects ALL the boys to talk only about things that she approves of. She will not allow her son to intermix with the others on any topic concerning air soft, paintball, or shot gun shooting. If we go out to eat, we have to go to a place that doesn’t have a TV because she’s affraid that the boys will see a commerical. She’s even gone as far as asking the management to turn the TVs off while we are there.
We have ask her to allow her son to do the same things as the others, but she refuses to let him. She insist that he stays close to her, because the fear that the other boys are going to be a bad influence or talking about something that she doesn’t agree with. Her husband allows this. Though he saids things are going to change.
I’d like to move my son out of this troop, he hates being dictated by the scout master’s wife, and he has alot of friends there. However, she’s getting out of control.
How do you explain to a woman, who has never been in a public school, that these kids are FORCED to go up faster than we were. I agree with not taking the wholesome away from these kids. But I do want to be realalistic in life. There’s alot of crap out there that they are introduced to daily. But do we continue putting up with our kids being corrected for expressing their thoughts? Do you have a answer for a parent who is constantly interfereing with our troop. Honestly, I worry that she may cause some of our boys who are so close to getting their Eagle Scouts, to leave…. Thank you for your time….

    3. Mike,
Thank you for a great show. You made the event very memorable, not only for me, but for my grandson who was inspired to get on the stick to get his Eagle by a letter you wrote eariler. His project is almost done, and believe me, he has gotten plenty dirty over the past year reclaiming an old minority cemetery from from the bushes and briars completely covering it. He even discovered a WWI Veteran’s final resting place who was buried in 1948. Thanks for all you do.

    4. Dear Mike,
Just wanted you to know that my two sons were at the Jamboree and you were one of the highlights of their trip. We have all enjoyed watching you get dirty for years! Thanks for making this an even more memorable trip for all the Scouts. My older son, Brandon Fraser, received his Eagle Award in front of the WW2 Memorial the day before they reached Fort AP Hill. He and his brother Zach were both excited to learn that you are an Eagle Scout. Thank you for taking the time to be there for this important celebration.

      Sincerely,
      Angie Bliese

    5. Me too! Me too! I want a shirt(s) for our whole troop – #250 Iowa City, Iowa. We’re always fighting the good (and dirty) fight out here in the People’s Republic. Many people would just as soon the BSA went away. For example, our “church’s” “youth leader” won’t even let her child be in scouts because of our standards.
      Thanks for your help.

    6. Mike, Thank you for all that you have done. My son Clark watches you all the time and he is a project away from Eagle (The first in our family.) Now that he knows that you are an Eagle oh my word. He has always known that an Eagle would go far. Now he can see it. Thank you from your friends in the south. We will see you on our TV soon. :)

    8. I have one son at the Jamboree, another one ready to cross over from Cub Scouts to a troop and another one that just started Cub Scouts and my husband and I are both in scouts as helpers…we loved your message and how you gave it. We loved the shirt can we get some somewhere???

    9. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story with the scouts on Saturday. My husband (almost eagle), son (Webelos I), daughter (daisy), and I (pack treasurer) were there. For us, you were the highlight of the whole evening.

As a bit of clean freak, I have a hard time just letting the dirt happen. I know that a dirty kid is a happy kid. After listening to you speech, I will just let be what will be. It will all come out in the wash. When you post the petition, my family will definitely sign it.

    10. Mike,
you gave an excellent and inspiring speech. My two sons will be talking about this for years to come. The BSA could not have chosen a better person to address the scouts. Your trials and tribulations are something every scout can relate to.
      Sincerely,

    11. Mr. Ambassador of Dirt,
We have always been Mike Rowe/Dirty Jobs fans in our family-and we knew you had been a scout in your “less-experienced years” :-) But your speech at the Jambo on Saturday made an impact on our family and our scouts that we will never forget! I have never heard anyone inspire my scouts the way you were able to-and we have been Scouts and leaders for over 30 years. We appreciated your ability to so humorously sum up the Scouting ideal! Your talent truly goes beyond getting dirty! We want to express our heartfelt thank you for taking time to visit our boys and for the priceless gift of inspiration you gave to them!! 12. Mike,

Thank you so much for giving of yourself and your time to speak to our young men at BSA Jamboree. Your message was strong, wise, engaging, and the guys loved it! We appreciate your being such an outstanding role model for our sons and showing them that the values of scouting are worthwhile and life long.

    15. I wanted to take a quick moment to let you know how much I appreciated the message that you shared at the Shining Light Ceremony. I loved your words about scouting teaching you that you could do the uncomfortable. Thanks for taking the time to inspire the boys.

    16. I’d just like to say thank you for coming and sharing your experiences in scouting and how you explained how scouts can affect you in the long run.

      Great speech!

    17. Hi Mike: You were absolutely fantastic at the Scout Jamboree! What an inspiration for our scouts–our son Josh was at the show with his friends–we went to watch the show in our area with parents of another scout. Your message was great–and you really engaged the boys. Thanks so much for your time and caring about this wonderful organization!!

    18. Mike,
It sure seemed that your conversation with the entire arena was hitting home with every scout who remembered the chaos and fun of their first meeting. It was a riot on TV too. For those us far from Virginia and decades from our first meeting, your recollections show just how important those first moments can be in the life of young man. Thanks.

PS, I ordered one of your shirts within minutes of you leaving the stage last night.

    19. Mike,

Thank you so much for your words at Jambo! Very inspirational about the difference that scouting can make in your life! WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A T-SHIRT! Will you be mass producing them? My son (Matthew Wadsworth) is a new Eagle Scout and I just sent a letter request off to you! Thank you for your example to the Boy Scouts and showing them that an early life lesson can turn into a job! You’re awesome!

    20. Mike,
What a fantastic speech last evening. We are so glad we had the opportunity to watch it live in Times Square. Your message to our boys was perfect.

    21. Mike,

Thank you for your contributions to Boy Scouting and your time and talent in sharing your experiences with Scouts from around the world. Not only did you bring entertainment and laughter to the Jamboree, you also sent a strong message of hard work and perseverance to youth around the country.

Similar to your story, I was first unsure of Scouting as a young kid. However, after having earned my Eagle, I can look back and say that Scouting has changed my life and helped me develop social, professional, and everyday life skills.

I have admired your work for a long time and hope you continue to inspire young kids (and young adults like me) to work hard and honestly in everything they do. Thanks!

      Stay Dirty!

    22. Mike,

I’d like to thank you for sharing your memories of scouting with the boy’s last night. While listening to your story it reminded me of my journy in scouts. I’m currently enjoying another tour in scouting with my son as their Den Leader. We were fortunate enough to attend the Jamboree last night with a few Webelos. I’d also like to encourage all past scouts to take some time and give the youth of today a chance to make some memories that will last them a lifetime.
How can we get one of the Clean Scout shirts from last night?
      Thanks again.

    23. I wanted to thank you for giving of your time at the BSA Jamboree yesterday. My son, 3 troop leaders and a few other boys drove the 2+ hours from Chesapeake, VA to attend. I texted him early in the day and he said everything was alright. I only received one other text from him the remainder of the day… I’M IN FRONT OF MIKE FREAKIN ROWE!!! You totally made it his day and he is even MORE driven to get from star to Eagle. Thank you!!! His scout leaders are AWESOME and you made the trip just that much bettah!

    25. Mike,
I was at the show and your speech to the boys was great, I really enjoyed it. A group of us just returned from Philmont so we know and agree that while a Scout is clean, he cannot be afraid to get a little dirty along the way.

Thanks again for sharing your experience with the Jamboree.

    26. Thank you Mike for your appearance at the Jamboree and your message. My son has got to be one of your BIGGEST fans so to be in attendance on Saturday AND get to see you live, was a highlight of his life for sure!! He watches every episode of Dirty Jobs that he possibly can. He admires what you do (as do we) and loves to play in the mud (like you say in the Defense of Dirt). Your story was inspiring. I hope it helps him deal with some of his difficulties and to continue on to Eagle. Thanks again for taking the time out to speak to the boys live yesterday and for speaking up for the average hard working American! You’re AWESOME!!

    28. Mike,

You deserve a huge Thank You for such an inspiring talk last night. It was not only good for the Scouts but it should also serve as a great reminder what a large influence Scout Leaders can have in the life of these future leaders of our communities.

      Thank You!

Thanks for spending time with the scouts. Our son is there and I can’t wait to hear what he thought of the show. Great message for the boys. He’s well on his way to Eagle and I hope this gives him an extra push. Thanks again.

    30. Hi Mike,

I just wanted to thank you for you very interesting, funny, real and inspriational talk you gave at the BSA Jamboree Arena Show last night. I have attended the last three jambos and your comments will be most memorable to the boys in attedence. Thank You!

    31. Thank you for delivering a ‘sensible’ message to the young men last night. They are our future and our world needs to know that if positive things happen, it’s not by committee or by teleconference or because they downloaded an app, it’s because someone went out and got their hands dirty first.

      Deb Saunders | 08/01/10 | 5:33 am
    32. Mike,

Wow!! The arena show was fabulous!! Thanks for your contribution.

I first heard of you when a former scout exec shared “Mike wishes the Boy Scouts a Happy 100th” I loved it, bookmarked the site, and vowed to find out who you were. (later, of course.)

Since my son is attending this year’s Jamboree, and my niece is the public information officer at Fort A. P. Hill, watching the Arena Show was a high priority.

When you appeared on stage the dots were connected!

Your message is (literally)noteworthy. It begins at 3:08:30 on the UStream video. I am taking notes and discussing them with my son when he gets home.

I guess once Scouting gets into your heart you are a Scout forever.

      Yours in Scouting,

      Bill Rankin

      Found You on FB

    33. Mr. Rowe, just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that I think the BSA made an excellent choice asking you to address our boys. Your message captured the attention of one Scout I know, who was on the fence about continuing, until he heard your message. He was moved, and told me he wants to stay involved, now. Thank you.

I have been covering the Jamboree as an online Examiner writer and there had been much anticipation to your appearance. Thanks for taking the time, not only to appear tonight, but mostly for the quality of your message.

    34. Hey Mike – Thank-you SO MUCH for spending time tonight with all those boys at the Scout Jamboree. I really enjoyed your talk – watched it on the WEB broadcast. You did a great job and really nailed it. My son was there and he – like me – is a big fan of yours.

No doubt you are a very busy man but to share your time with the scouts makes you a special man as well. I saw your parents – they must be very proud. Really nice to see an Eagle come home.

      God bless you.

      Sincerely,

    35. Thank-you for recognizing these boys with your inspirational message. Enjoyed listening to you and I am sure with your explanation of what Scouting meant to you you have inspired those young men in the crowd tonight to perserve through the tough times, even when they get dirty !

    36. Mike,
I have two sons at the National Jamboree! My wife and I also watched you through the internet, we all thought you gave a wonderful message to the boys of America. We also love your scout is clean t-shirt, we would love to purchase some if possible. Thanks for the message and being there for the boys.

    37. Mike Rowe did an absolutely fabulous job explaining what scouting is about. I watched a room full of boys listen to his Jamboree talk tonight. I could not have been more impressed. I was a scout at about the same time as Mr. Rowe. Berets, polyester and urban adventures but what I remember most were the muddy creeks, the ice covered ponds and scrapping hands and knees across boulders and gravel. His message is a good one and I thankful he has shared it with thousands of young people tonight.

    38. Mike,

Thank you for an inspiring performance and message to Scouts of all ages. The support you give to the Boy Scouts of America helps Americans understand just what Scouting can do to help young men grow and mature. Sadly, the value of hard, honest work is often belittled in our society today. Keep up the good work and stay dirty!
