As the saying goes, “feed a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.” This recent story from the NBC Nightly News takes that philosophy but instead of fishing, troubled teens are learning carpentry skills by building boats. Building something from the ground up isn’t just about cutting and hammering. The kids are also getting lessons in math, problem solving and critical thinking. Amazing what a little carpentry project can teach you.
Not only has this small program turned around theses kids’ lives and gotten them off the street but it’s also planting seeds for the next generation of tradesfolk. Check it out. You’ll see that the program director refers to this program as “we take knuckleheads and turn them into carpenters.” That’s a pretty sweet journey. And if there is a program like this in your neck of the woods, we’d love to hear about it.
